Scott Shields started his career as a political blogger in early 2003, contributing to the grassroots group blog Dean Nation. He quickly transitioned his work there to create his own site, DemWatch.com, where he covered the race for the 2004 presidential nomination. That site was highlighted as a resource by outlets as diverse as the Guardian of London and Yahoo! News. In 2005, Shields joined the writing staff of Jerome Armstrong's trailblazing progressive website MyDD.com. That same year, he helped establish and brand the progressive community blog Blue Jersey and joined the Netroots Advisory Council for the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy.
In 2006, Shields was recruited to join the Menendez for Senate campaign as the Director of Internet Operations. His work using cutting-edge technology platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Scoop earned the campaign favorable press, leading PoliticsNJ.com to name him one of the year's Top Political Operatives.
Scott Shields cut his teeth in the world of music, running a small independent record label. Out of necessity, he became well-versed in guerrilla marketing, graphic design and creative branding. He went on to work in corporate marketing, public policy, and local government relations, before transitioning to a career in electoral politics, a surprisingly natural synthesis of his prior experiences.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Shields holds a degree in American Studies. While at Rutgers, he designed and maintained the website for the American Studies department in between playing basement shows and hanging out at the Melody Bar. Even though the blue Manic Panic from his days as a teenage punk rocker has long since washed out, the tattoos are still there. (Sorry, dad.)
